The University of Mary Washington’s very own Men’s Basketball team has made it to Division III Nationals. This is not only a big deal for the current students, but the UMW alumni, and the Fredericksburg community as well.
Mary Wash has a great athletics department. It’s amazing to see history being made in real time as the team has never made it to the national championship before.
The watch party was a hit. Alumni, professor, Fredericksburg neighbors, and students all filled the stands. There was food catered by the UMW Dining Services, and merchandise being given out by the University. (Notably, the UMW Men’s Basketball Championship t-shirts.)
Alumni were reconnecting, people were bonding over the shared excitement, everyone was cheering like the team could hear us. In the last few minutes of the game, everyone in the stand stood up. UMW had been up by about 10 points for the last bit of the game, but slowly, Emory caught up. The tension was real.
In the last few seconds of the game, the Eagles managed to score a buzzer-beater point to avoid going into overtime, winning the National Championships. The crowd went crazy! Fans were on edge the last few minutes of the game, and UMW had won in the most exciting way.
This game really put UMW on the map. I predict that this win will be good not only for the basketball program, but all UMW athletics recruitment in the future.
